AMATO: IDEA OF KOSOVO AS SERBIAN PROVINCE INCONCEIVABLE
ZAGREB, November 27 (Tanjug) Italian Prime Minister Giuliano
Amato said on Monday it was impossible to imagine that KosovoMetohija
should again be a province within Serbia.
A successive implementation of UN Resolution 1244 is possible,
and
time is the crucial factor if one wants this process to take the right
course, the Zagreb daily Jutarnji list quoted Amato as saying.
He went on to say that his discussions with Yugoslav President
Kostunica showed that he is not currently in the position to offer the
province a status equivalent to that of Montenegro, as no one in
KosovoMetohija would accept anything but independence for the province.
Amato also said that he realized that the most responsible
political figures involved, including Kostunica, were deferring the
settlement of the Kosovo problem for the future. Amato interpreted this
as
a willingness to give time a chance.
Should that time be spent by fanning the fire, the time will be

wasted, he said.

Kostunica to Visit Italy on December 11

ROME, Dec 5, 2000 -- (Reuters) Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica
will
make his first official visit to Italy as head of state on December 11,
the
Italian president's office said on Monday.
Kostunica will meet President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Prime Minister
Giuliano
Amato and Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini.
Amato was the first European Union head of government to travel to
Belgrade
after Kostunica took over power from President Slobodan Milosevic in
October.
The visit is also the first to Italy by the Yugoslav government since
NATO's
bombing of the Balkan state last year over its repression of ethnic
Albanians
in Kosovo.
Italy was the main launching pad for the hundreds of fighter bombers
which
used NATO and U.S. airbases in the country during the bombing campaign.
In October, an Italian lieutenant-general took over as head of
peacekeeping
troops in Kosovo, deployed to provide a safe environment in the province

following the withdrawal of Serb forces last year.
